Impact for research and career

Impact from research | online workshop via Zoom | Contact to join next

This is for those who want to understand how they can position for advancing their research and career. Workshop concists of one lecture and one impact assignment. In the lecture you will understand more about how to position for impact. That you will apply on your own impact description (assignment). After workshop you have a better understanding of how to create impact, and a first strategy of your own impact plan.

The impact of research is essential for a career. Merely publishing and hoping for impact is not enough. Impact is the primary motivation for research funding. No matter how advanced your research is, it is crucial to demonstrate its potential impact. It is not just about the research impact, but also about how you as an individual researcher will create impact. Technology does not become useful on its own; this is driven by individuals.

Being proactive can position you for better impact. The workshop will provide more insights on how to achieve this.

  • Lecture on impact from research by Mikael Syväjärvi (half day)
  • Workshop on research cases (full day)

Workshop fee: 220 EUR

Lecture

The lecture will introduce various aspects on impact from research. You can use the insights to prepare for your own case.

Workshop

The workshop will include research cases. You will present your case and get feedback. You will also learn from the other cases.

Learn from each others cases.

Before the workshop there will be a lecture. We will invite you to a date that suits you.

You should preferably submit abstract at least one month before the workshop. The number of presentations per workshop is limited. One month in advance will make that you will have time to attend a lecture and better plan your presentation by using the insights from the lecture.

Abstract information

The abstract contains two sections: the brief abstract and a summary. The brief abstract should be highly condensed, typically a few sentences to a short paragraph. It should include the research question, methodology, main points, and significance, but excludes specific details. The summary can be longer and more detailed than the abstract, ranging from a few paragraphs to a page. It may include additional information beyond the main points, such as background context, limitations, and future research directions. The brief abstract and summary must be not more than two pages including title and researcher information. Do not write too detailed, such detailed level is for other experts in your area.

The abstract will be shared with the other workshop participants who are at the same session. In such way everyone can read researcher cases before the session and be more familiar. That will give efficient exchange at the session and better feedback to all.

The presentation

The presentation will have 30 minutes for presentation and feedback. The presentation should be 10-15 minutes and there will be feedback during the remaining time. The optimum is 10 minutes presentation. Discussion and exchange (dialogue) provides much more valuable information and clarifications than one way communication (presentation).

The presentations can be in different research fields. If you can not present your main research idea and impact to someone outside your field, then you have not presented it sufficiently. Reviewers of proposals, investors, entrepreneurs, etc are not experts in your field.
