Workshop format advantage

There is good interaction when we are a small group of research professionals. Everyone has time to discuss, propose and be part of the exchange. This works very well when we are 4-5 researchers who are discussing. Exchange is also fine when we are 10 in the group. Maybe all will not have time to make their input if we have limited time, for example half an hour. It also works when we are 15 or 20, if there is more time.

Once we are 20 or more, the exchange will be less. Presentations shift to one way information flow.

That is why small format workshop can be more useful than a large conference. Better to have exchange with ten persons who are right for the topic, instead of randomly share information for several hundreds.

We are from time to time invited to conferences. An e-mail with some conference manager name. No personal invitation, they invite with a not relevant topic (maybe using a title of a paper many years ago). Our name might be spelled wrong. How much value do you have of presenting at such conference? If it is a physical conference, then there might be chances of exchange during breaks, poster session, etc. But the only interaction at an online conference is the question part, and that is often limited to 3 minutes. The traditional structure is 12 minutes presentation and 3 minutes interaction. If programme is delayed due to technical issues, or previous presenters are talking more than 15 minutes, then interaction is even less. It is basically pointless if we want to create opportunities from presenting our nice work.

Online workshop has smaller format that is suitable for exchange. Be active and have video on, then there will be valuable exchange and building professional relation. Allow time for interaction, and there will be opportunities, ideas, or something useful. Your network will grow.

Organize a workshop and you will be seen as leader. You can add that in your CV, and grow your professional status. Your workshop will build your network. Career is promoted and the chances of new project and collaborations will grow.
